About Pacaya

Founded in 2021 by David Karangu, a resident of Atlanta, GA, Pacaya was created to provide a solution to the increasing sense of isolation by fostering local, real world connections through shared activities. David, who previously owned MercedesBenz, BMW, Ford, and Chevrolet franchises, transitioned from a successful career in the automotive industry to pursue his passion for technology driven social innovation.

Pacaya leverages cutting edge AI tools and LLMs (Large Language Models) to help users instantly connect with nearby people, places, and activities, making it easier to find meaningful interactions and experiences.

Our Story

Pacaya was founded to solve the growing issue of social disconnection, particularly after the COVID19 pandemic. The app is designed to help users make real world connections by discovering nearby activities and meeting people with similar interests. Pacaya’s unique value lies in its use of cutting edge AI tools and LLMs that tailor recommendations for activities, groups, and events based on user preferences and proximity.

Founder David Karangu, who previously owned and operated major car dealerships including MercedesBenz, BMW, Ford, and Chevrolet franchises, saw an opportunity to shift focus from automobiles to building a social platform that fosters authentic, in person interactions. 

Key Milestones

  • December 2021: Pacaya was founded with the vision of helping people reconnect around local activities after the pandemic.
  • May 2022: Prelaunch of Pacaya, explaining its USP and customer benefits.
  • October 2024: Official launch of Pacaya in Austin, TX, marking the app’s expansion into major U.S. cities.
  • Q1 2025: Plans to expand Pacaya to additional U.S. cities and internationally, utilizing AI tools to customize local experiences and group activities.
